Words of Wisdom: What you don’t know about your POWER

Many of us think that our power is a tool or a weapon, but, in fact, power is a state of being, the way you see, hold and handle yourself in the world that then determines your experiences. The external world can only respond to the way you hold and handle yourself internally. If you show up as weak, broken, confused and dazed, the world is going to respond to you that way. If you show up as confident, kind, compassionate and loving, then the world is going to respond to you that way.

–Iyanla Vanzant (an excerpt from 7 Things You Don’t Know About the Power You’ve Always Had )

Your only power is in the present

There is nothing more powerful than the present moment. Yet so many of us are stuck in the past, or have our heads so far in the clouds of the future that we become accidents waiting to happen.

The art of being in the present moment was something that I became conscious of after watching the Oprah Winfrey Show, where she introduced a book titled, “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle. Oprah did a 10-week-long web series featuring Eckhart discussing the book with readers from all over the world via Skype. This book is so powerful, as it uncovers the part of humans that we often forget; the power of the stillness within.

In the book, Eckhart speaks about the importance of being in the stillness of the present moment because it is all that you truly have.

The past is made up of only memories that we hold on to; those that we constantly replay and live out the emotions of time and time again. The future is something that we can only imagine, hope for, fear, etc… But the present is where we have the most power, our only power to make things happen, to be happy, to make a change, to feel better, to take steps towards goals and dreams. The present is the only factor that ever matters because moments of  “now” will become the past, and these same moments will set the tone for the future.

I was inspired to write this post because  I too have to remind myself to get out of my own head and learn to be still so that I can embrace all that is going on around me.

For example, I could be spending the day with my mom because I hope to strengthen our relationship. While in the midst of an important conversation about life, I may glance down at my nails and think, “man I need a manicure.” This could lead to another thought about how I’m going to pay for this manicure since I wont get paid until Friday. Then I’ll think, “Oh I know, I can just use the money from that dress I just returned to the Macy’s… But I really liked that dress… I should go back and get it… Nahhhh.” These thoughts could go on and on, and while they are, I would have possibly missed several opportunities to truly connect to the person that I’m speaking with so that I can begin to understand them a little more. But how could I fully understand when I’m so caught up in my own head?

This concept can apply to any and every area of your life. It could be something as simple as looking for something that you’ve misplaced but you can’t even begin to retrace your steps because your head is so clouded with thoughts of “where is it”…I can’t find it… I don’t see it”, or blame that you don’t give yourself the chance to be still and retrace your movements.

On the contrary, it could be something as complex as praying for a better situation, and being so caught up in thoughts of  who did what to hurt or offend you, that you can’t even see that in this very moment your situation is already better.  You can think about the past, but you’re doing it now. You can think about the future, but you’re doing it now. You are reading this blog RIGHT NOW, and by doing so you are  setting the tone for the moments that follow.

Create moments of stillness for yourself by releasing all thoughts that get in the way of whatever is in front of you in this very moment. Embrace all that surrounds you, and be appreciative for the miracle that you are.  Right now is all that you have, so make the most of every moment by learning to be present.

Discovering who you are

Who are you?

Beyond the titles, names, and labels we each hold, lies the mysterious and ever-changing being within. It’s so easy for us to get caught up in the hype about who we are, but the truth is that most people don’t have the slightest clue.  When you understand that nothing on the outside of you even comes close to defining who you are, then you’re getting there. The material wealth and accomplishments are only a reflection of what you have the ability to do. But to know what drives you, your gifts and talents, your LOVE (for self and others), and the power within is to truly know one’s self.

One of the easiest ways to get in tune with who you are is to learn WHO YOU ARE NOT. When you’re faced with situations and have to make instant decisions, pay attention to how you feel. When you feel peace, love, joy, happiness in these moments, you are indeed operating out of the YOU that is truly YOU… the one that GOD intended for you to be. Anything less may just be the thoughts and ideas about yourself and life that you have been programmed into adopting. However, unlike our emotions, the TRUTH is something that never changes. And you know the truth by the way it feels.

Learn to get beyond the surface and discover all that your spirit has to offer. And when you do, share it with the world! This blog is just one of my many gifts to the world and I hope that it helps you to see me for who I really am.

Oprah Presents Master Class: Diane Sawyer

I’m not sure how many people actually watch this show on OWN, Oprah’s new network, but I’m almost certain that those who don’t are missing a real treat. This is therapy 101, church part 2, and the mysterious wonders of life wrapped up in one.

Master Class is probably the best idea for a show that anyone could have thought of. After all, what better teacher is there than life itself, or the life of someone else? Isn’t that what all religions are formed around?… the lives of great philosophers, the life stories of the sons and daughters of GOD, etc…?

Random: My “Aha” Moment While On the Run

I went for a jog this evening, and suddenly I had a moment. It was one of those “aha!” moments that Oprah always talks about on her show. Those moments when you realize something profound about your life that can possibly change your life forever…

Anyway, after running myself into exhaustion, I looked up into the clear night sky… I could see that there were too many stars to count, but right then I found what I assumed to be the brightest star from what was within my view. I stopped to stare at it a bit, and in that moment I felt as if I was winning, like Charlie Sheen. Lol Except, it hit me that the thing I want to improve on is consistency…

And in the background I could hear my mother’s voice say, “if you’re gonna do something, do it right, and be consistent.”

Now I know how athletes feel… Lol

Anyway, this revelation is the reason for this late night post. I started this blog with wondeful things in mind, and with my vision and the practice of being consistent, I’ll get there soon enough.

This post has been an official part of the evolution of B.C. Starks. 🙂
