This morning I was inspired by a 16-year-old student that I used to tutor in math. He is extremely passionate about baseball and has dreams of eventually becoming a professional baseball player. He now plays baseball for his high school, but this past weekend he sprained his ankle while playing a pick-up game of basketball. He told me that after the nurse wrapped his ankle in ice, she turned to him and said, “I know you love baseball, but you better make sure that you have something to fall back on.”
What was most inspiring was his response… Well, it was a more indirect response, but it is what he ultimately believes.
He told me that what the nurse had said made him feel uneasy because it’s not what he truly believes. He feels that he can do and be whatever he desires, regardless of what things seem to be at the moment. He made reference to a recent commencement speech that was given by Denzel Washington at Penn State University. In the speech, Denzel spoke about how one should never be afraid to fail. He said, “If you don’t fail, then you are not trying.”
The whole “you need to have something to fall back on” message is one that many of us will hear throughout our lives, and its usually said by those who mean well. But the truth is, instead of worrying about what you will fall back on, in the words of Denzel, you should be more focused on “what you can fall forward to.” Your faith should be enough to fall back on, while your passion and gifts from GOD is what you will continue to lean towards.
This message was most powerful to me today… and it came from the mouth of a babe.
Follow your dreams and let your inner spirit be your guide!
